Allow changing from MySQL to MariaDB and from MariaDB to MySQL on new servers

Planned

As a webhosting provider we would like to be able to switch between MySQL and MariaDB and from MariaDB to MySQL on a new server that doesn’t have any user databases.

The reason for wanting to do this is because installing and optimising a new server with external modules takes a long time.

Having to reinstall and reconfigure the server to change from MariaDB and MySQL is a huge pain.

Alot of webhosts clone virtual machines to avoid the long setup procedure. It would be preferable to not have to maintain two installs for VM templates.

Hello!

This is definitely something we have on our internal roadmap for database services, though I was a bit hesitant to mark this as planned I went ahead and did so but it should be noted that this isn't something that's planned for this year. The team that has been doing work in this area will be looking into the possibility of doing this conversion and identifying the best path forward potentially mid 2022, I can update with more information as soon as the plan becomes more solid.

Thanks,

Could cPanel provide some unofficial instructions about how to do this manually ?

I'm sorry don't have anything I can give you for that right now, the only way I would suggest doing it would be to reinstall the server (which is not optimal in the instance of an active server). In fact, as far as I know, there is no officially supported conversion method to move from MariaDB to MySQL. As we dive further into what will be needed to do that conversion for specific versions I'd be more comfortable sharing instructions then. You might check in with the forums to see if anyone has documented instructions until then?

I’m talking about a new server with no accounts.

I’ve just finished installing a new cPanel server with everything from cPanel settings, OS optimisations, third party plugins etc and it took about 10 hours.

This install will be converted to a VM template so I don’t have to do it every time.

I would like to avoid redoing everything and instead would like to uninstall MySQL 8, install MariaDB and te run everything cPanel does to the database during the install.

I'd like to discuss this with you further to get a better understanding of your environment, but this may not be the best place for that. Would it be ok if I emailed the address listed for this site?
