As a system admin and web hosting provider I would like Notifications in WHM for down services

Hi I thought this would be a great Idea, for the new cPanel 102 and up

I had an issue with the Nginx being down, I did get a notification from an email ( but then again sometimes we have had issues getting notifications due to what email service were using) I've seen other users complain about other notifications that Gmail sometimes does not deliver the email etc..

so I thought it would be great to get a notification in WHM when we login, for any service that is down or having an issue

so every thing from Home / Server Status / Service Status would popup in the top right corner where we ger notification of updates...

so right now i have a ticket open because Nginx is down. wont restart - and it would be nice if it had a little notification saying Nginx is down.

and if another service was down it would get a notification there that its down, and then if service goes back up notification its up.

then incase we don't see our email or it does not get delivered and we login we know there is an issue.

That would be a great thing to have in that top right Notification area

Thanks

PS in The notification area dropdown. I have only seen 2 types of notifications.

Update cPanel with next version

Restart server after pkg update and or kernel updates

This main area at top seems like a wasted space if those are the only notifications we get there.

That’s why I created this feature request to have services not working or issues pop up in that area if they are down.

That would be wise. While working in WHM you get instant notification if your services are down

Thanks again for listening

Hi Spiro,

I'm interested in hearing more about this request. I can see it working like this: a service would appear there as long as the service is down, and when it is back up it is cleared from notifications.

I have a scenario for discussion: Imagine all of the items from Home / Server Status / Service Status. If each item in the notification menu is clickable to take you somewhere to solve the problem, where would you expect to go when you click it?

How can we make this notification more useful to you?

Hello Kelly and cPanel admins

Another Idea would be to get notifications on the top right in WHM as well for AutoSSL Expiring soon and or AutoSSL Issues as well both for Sectigo expirations and LetsEncrypt.

this notification area could be an endless place for all notifications.

this is another GREAT REASON for this notification area to get AutoSSL Expiration and Failure notices here. for Hostnames etc.. and cPanel accounts.. just so we are aware of them and can handle them right away since were all having issues with Sectigo right now and can update our clients to LetsEncrypt or Back to Sectigo etc.

Hope to get this Featured Request Approved...

Hello Kelli,

Thanks for your reply.

I would assume : just my thought. If Nginx was down it would take you to Nginx Manager to try and restart it. Or any service that is down takes you to another page with the error log printed and a button to try and restart it. Or just click on it and try and restart the service then a pop up will show if it restarted properly and raining again or the error pop ups with the issue so we can better know why it failed.

Kinda the same as the email that is sent

So I guess what I’m thinking is:

The service is down

Shows in notification

Click to restart service

If restarts then it takes you to services page and you see it’s pending and restarted

If not then to an error page with more info on what is happening.

Then we can know what is happening by seeing the error page. (Can be taken from error log somehow )

Thanks

Kind Regards,

Spiro

Hello Kelli,

I just thought of another Idea.

once we got a service down. the notification shows that or multiple notifications for whatever service is down.

example

Nginx is down

Spamd is Down

MySQL is Down

so we have 3 notifications

once we click on any f them we go to WHM >Home / Server Status / Service Status

on the right of each one of these we can add a restart button for each service and to the right a popup with sucess it restarted or Failure with error message.

then we know what the issue is or more helpful to find out where to look.

simple screenshot of where I am talking about.

sorry for the kiddie design just a fast look

Thanks for yourtime hopefully this is a easier solution all on the same page. also when you see a service is down notification when you click you will see more notifications down as well and can try to restart them from the same page. if they suceed the popup box on the right side will show success and running.

if it has an issue the popup box give you the error what went wrong. now we either can look to fix it or get support ticket opened.

this is almost the same as in Nginx Manager page. there is a restart reconfigure to default and a popup for error and successful messages. on the far right side.

hope this is more clear of what im thinking. I

If anyone else wants to add there Idea I am welcome to here them

Spiro

PS. On the pop up for error we can add a support open ticket link as well - that will copy the error to the ticket system so the cPanel support staff will have the error upfront.

Save time for admins and support staff this will help narrow down what is going on with a service

Saves time for everyone for a speedy solution and less downtime for admin server and support Dept

This would be great as well

Thanks

Please make this available. :)

You could also make the restart option on the check mark when it down the check mark turns to a restart button. When it restarts the service if it goes back up the check mark ✅ turns back on notifying the admin it’s all good.

Hi Spiro,

Thank you for taking the time to write these, explaining the steps you'd like to take, and providing a mockup! For a few years I have been very interested in finding better ways to inform server admins when they need to know something is going on, and your detailed feedback is an excellent driver.

I have distilled a list of facts from all of this:

  1. Email notifications aren't good enough for various reasons (usually they get blocked or lost), so having something obvious in WHM UI would help when email falls short.
  2. Services go down and you need to know ASAP so that you can take action.
  3. The first thing you prefer to do is restart the service to see if that fixes the problem.
  4. If restart doesn't work, you prefer to read the error messaging right away, if it wasn't already accessable for you, so that you know where to begin troubleshooting.
  5. SSL expirations and failures is another area that requires immediate notice for actions you need to take care of.

From this list, the POs can work on a few ideas to see if we can create an easy and quick solution to expand the functionality of the Notifications button. We are in the midst of a few high priority heavy projects at the moment, so I will give an update when I have it. In the meantime please continue to share more ideas, and thank you so much for your time on this, Spiro!

Hello seems things are moving along with a lot of great updates to version 102 104 and looking forward to 106. Do you think we could get some insight on this feature request. Sometime this year ?

I really would love to see this happen sooner than later

Thanks so much

As mentioned Great work so far Team cPanel
