As a server administrator, I would the ability to change the standard links such as http://www.domain.tld/cpanel to http://www.domain.tld/panel

Why would you like to do this ? Is it to hide the cPanel brand, to hide that it's a cPanel server (security by obsecurity?).
As most customers know the cPanel links it would create confusion for them.
It would also cause issues for customers who have scripts in a folder called panel.
The advantage of using /cpanel is that script developpers know not to call their folders like this
