Add protocol field to SRV records in WHM + cPanel DNS editors

Hello,

Office 365 requires a protocol in the SRV records.

cPanel support has informed us that we should add it to the existing DNS record so instead of :

_sip.example.com.

we would have

_sip._tcp.example.com.

Once you know this it's easy to add, but as more and more people use Office 365 it would be nice to have an optional protocol field.

Very good idea! This would certainly help alleviate confusion for services that require the protocol.

I moved from another reseller host that had the protocol and service option for SRV, however cPanel & WHM does not have these fields. The cPanel & WHM developers need to seriously add this as Office 365 is extremely popular and is used widely. Please read this devs, it needs to change. Why don't you make it easy to add DNS fields, like Godaddy. I'm sure it's a simple re-design. Why do you have to make it so complicated, just copy the way Godaddy do it.

Hi Tony, and welcome to the feature request site! Our lead developer does see every single submission to the site, and many of our developers do spend time on this site. We weigh heavily the feedback on this site when we consider where to devote development time. Unfortunately this specific request hasn't seen much community support. We're definitely keeping an eye on it, though, and I'll see if we can find a spot for it on our roadmap.

Hello Benny,

I'm supporting Tony's request. I have lots of clients asking me to add dns recs in order to use ms office 365, not that I like it all that much, but I have to answer to them... You should make these inclusions easier.

Thanks,

Pedro

Hi Benny,

Thank you for contacting me and letting me know. I think this is a very important feature to have now that Microsoft Office 365 is used very widely. The SRV fields in cPanel/WHM are insufficient for Office 365 email entries and I do think this is an important feature to add very soon. Most of my clients now use Office 365 and I am forced to apply these settings at their domain registrar and then point an IP address to a web hosting account which I do not really want to do. I need to have full control over DNS when a nameserver is changed to our web hosting accounts otherwise we'll keep on bugging the client.

Also, I think the DNS zone entries should be exactly like that found on Godaddy's DNS entries, it's easier to add entries. I think millions of people using cPanel & WHM would really like this feature.

Thanks, Tony

No problem at all! Thank you for the additional feedback. I totally agree that it could be useful to many people, and I am excited to see how the community feels about it!

Also, don't forget the 'Service' field too for SRV.

I still can't believe there are only 13 votes for this feature, This is very strange to me. Is no one using Microsoft Office 365? It's really huge here in the UK, so not sure about US or other countries. Very, very strange. I should have a word with Bill Gates, haha. I think the cPanel devs should just implement it anyway, it makes a lot of sense. And also please re-design the DNS zone section to be more like a proper DNS entry system. I also think the MX record entries should be located in the DNS zone section and not as a separate entry, it's really confusing as it is still part of the DNS.

This feature is just to make it easier. There is nothing stopping you from using Microsft Exchange, as you just have to specify the protocol manually adding ._tcp to the first part. That is probably why it hasn't got a large amount of traction yet.

True, but not the correct way to do it, unless it is isn't important enough for the devs. It's actually Office 365 as it comes as a whole Office Management package. Exchange is just for emails.

It's not the easiest way, but it does seem to be the correct way :

Check out the first example here :

I already manged to get Office 365 working on one of my web hosting packages by using example 2 of that link you sent me. Maybe I am just use to the way Godaddy have their DNS zone set up, which is the normal way of doing it. If you're not use to the normal way Godaddy to do it (or any other domain registrar company), then you would think setting up SRV in cPanel is the normal way, which it is not. Oh well, we'll just have to see what the cPanel devs come up with in the future as for now it does work if you hack it this way.

I have to say it is super annoying that we still do not have a protocol field for SRV records.

This is on our radar but isn't something we've been able to get added to our plans yet. As soon as we are, I'll make sure to let everyone know!

Great job on the info. It helped me setup DNS for a client. Much <3 and a good addon idea for cPanel.
