Support iOS's version of Push IMAP

Feature Importer shared this idea 7 years ago
Completed

As a Hosting Provider, I want cPanel to support iOS's version of Push IMAP, so that my customers are able to use the Push IMAP feature on their Apple devices.

Many of our customers have asked if we can support Push-IMAP and I am wondering if this is something that can be enabled in the imapd configuration file or anything?

This is a feature that has been migrated over from the cPanel Forums. All previous comments and discussions concerning this feature can be located at:

Does anyone know if Dovecot even supports push of new emails from IMAP? Is this the same as IMAP idle?

There are addons for Dovecot to support this such as https://github.com/st3fan/dovecot-xaps-plugin the problem however is that the transport mechanism of EXIM must be Dovecot-LDA or Dovecot-LMTP and out of the box cPanel uses appendfile.

The suggestions are too complex to implement and have technical issues. The cPanel team can go the easiest way, they just implement z-push. It acts as an extra layer that simulates ActiveSync capabilities over the IMAP server...

  1. Z-Push is an open-source application to synchronize ActiveSync compatible devices such as mobile phones, tablets and mobile phones. With a history of over 6 years of successful synchronization with multiple backends Z-Push is the leading open source push synchronization.

This include:

  • REAL auto-configuration for IMAP clients;
  • Highly power efficient push service compatible with iOS, Android and 99,99% of email clientes;
  • It's easy to implement (done it myself under debian multiple times - never tried over cPanel);
  • The implementation runs fully over Apache with php scripts...

This is what should be implemented because it fixes multiple problems we all face in a very good way.

Just chaged phone and moved to ios and the 15 min minium delay for refreshing e-mail is very long. z-push if it's stable seems like a very nice option as it also supports other devices (Android and Blackberry) and I like the auto configuration feature too.

I keep getting email updates from this thread, but my iPhones have ALWAYS notified me instantly when an email comes in. ALL of my mail is in various cPanel accounts. I can send an email from my computer though, and my phone will ding within about 4 seconds.

So what's not supported here?

Not sure how that is possible - the instant notification is not supported presently for iOS - perhaps you have andriod?

No, it's behaved this way on my 4S, 5S, and 6. Also on my coworkers 5 and 6 -- and for as long as we've used iPhones.

It's predictable and repeatable, but I'm not sure how or why, if it's supposedly not supported.

Standard iPhone Mail app and standard cPanel configuration -- but if a message comes in on any of my ~8+ configured IMAP accounts, my phone clicks (my sound notification) within a couple seconds.

Yep push support would be so nice ! (also in Thunderbird)

Waiting up to 15 min to receive a mail is a pain. (I mean without any manual check)
